TSS 482 vs Skilled 189: Which Path Fits You?

Both routes lead to Australia, but the journey, conditions and outcomes are very different.

Many professionals hear about the TSS 482 and Skilled 189 visas but don’t clearly know which one aligns with their profile, risk comfort and long-term PR goals in Australia.

Two Routes, Two Different Mindsets

TSS 482 is employer-sponsored and often quicker if you already have an Australian job offer. The 189 is independent and leads directly to permanent residency, but usually demands higher points and patience.

High Level Difference
TSS 482 = sponsored & temporary • 189 = independent & permanent from day one.

TSS 482 – Employer-Sponsored Temporary Route

Under TSS 482, your Australian employer sponsors you to fill a specific skilled position. Your stay and work rights are linked to that employer and role.

  • Requires a valid job offer from an approved sponsor
  • Visa duration depends on occupation list and stream
  • Can be a stepping stone to PR via employer pathways

Skilled 189 – Independent, Points-Based PR

The Skilled Independent 189 is for candidates who qualify on their own points — without employer or state sponsorship. Once granted, you are already a permanent resident.

  • Points based on age, skills, language and experience
  • No employer or state sponsor required
  • More freedom: live and work anywhere in Australia

Which Option Is Better for You?

If you have a strong job offer and want a faster entry, TSS 482 may work well. If you are planning long-term, willing to build your points and wait for an invitation, 189 can be more powerful.

Instead of asking “Which visa is better?”, ask “Which visa matches my current profile and long-term plan?”
